Caring for and maintaining your Pilates Reformer: Cleaning, springs, and lifespan

Caring for a Pilates reformer by The Virtù Line

For a Pilates reformer to work reliably, it must be properly maintained and checked regularly. This guide summarizes the most important steps for cleaning, maintenance, and spring care to ensure your equipment remains safe and hygienic.

Cleaning after use

Regular cleaning contributes directly to hygiene, operational safety, and service life. In everyday use, very little is usually needed:

  • Wipe surfaces with a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth.
  • For stubborn dirt, use a small amount of mild household cleaner diluted with water.
  • Wipe off afterwards with clear water to remove any cleaner residue.
  • Do not use abrasive or aggressive cleaning agents – these can damage upholstery and surfaces.

Mechanical components (rails, rollers, fittings) should only be cleaned with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth.

Do not oil, do not grease

A common mistake is trying to "lubricate" the reformer. Never use oil, grease-based lubricants, or wet lubricants. These can cause malfunctions, material damage, or safety risks. Improper cleaning or unsuitable agents are the most frequent avoidable causes of damage.

Regular maintenance & inspection

Regular maintenance is a prerequisite for safe operation and a long service life. Inspect the equipment before the first use and after the initial applications – and thereafter at fixed intervals:

  • Are all fasteners, screw connections, and components tight?
  • Are there any visible signs of damage, unusual noises, or loose-looking parts?

If you notice anything unusual: stop using the equipment immediately and check it. For some maintenance tasks, the carriage can be removed – this is simple and usually takes only a few minutes.

Springs: safety-critical wear parts

The springs determine the resistance – and are safety-critical wear parts. Check them regularly in an unloaded, resting state for:

  • Deformations, kinks, or uneven gaps
  • Corrosion or material fatigue

Damaged or suspicious springs must be replaced immediately. Regardless of their condition, replace springs at the latest after 2 years or 3,000 hours of use – whichever comes first. With intensive use, studio operation, or high humidity, the service life may be shortened. During training, ensure that springs do not snap back uncontrollably or hit against stops.

For information on how to choose the right resistance, read our guide Reformer Springs & Resistance.

What you can do yourself – and what you cannot

Replacing wear parts (springs, ropes, handles, rollers, upholstery) is considered reasonable DIY work and is not covered by warranty. Upon request, The Virtù Line offers technical support via team or video call to carry out permitted measures under guidance. Always perform maintenance on safety-relevant components only when the equipment is unloaded and not in use.

In summary

  • Use a soft cloth and mild, diluted cleaners – never abrasive, never oil.
  • Check all connections before/after the first uses and then regularly.
  • Inspect springs regularly and replace them after 2 years / 3,000 hours at the latest.
  • If in doubt: contact The Virtù Line – we will guide you through permitted steps.
