Assembling a Pilates Reformer: Step-by-Step Installation

Pilates Reformer aufbauen: Montage Schritt für Schritt

A Pilates reformer is delivered partially assembled and can be set up in just a few steps. This guide will walk you through the preparation, tools required, and the individual assembly steps. It applies across all models in the The-Virtù-Line series – individual models may differ in detail.

Preparation

  • Location: Level, stable, and non-slip surface. Plan for at least 0.6 m of clearance all around.
  • Work in pairs: The frame and carriage have significant weight – assembly is easier and safer with two people.
  • Take your time: Work calmly and check that everything is tightened securely after each step.

Tools & Delivery Contents

You only need a screwdriver and – for opening the transport crate – a small hammer. Before starting, check the delivery contents to ensure all components are present: frame, carriage, pulley/riser bars, spring bar and springs, ropes with handles, shoulder rests, footbar, padded footplate or jump board, headrest, and wheels.

Step-by-Step Assembly

  1. Unpacking: Use the screwdriver and hammer to open the box's safety locks. Remove the frame, place it on its legs, and lay out all components.
  2. Mounting the wheels: Attach the wheels to the underside of the reformer.
  3. Bars & pulleys: Insert the anchor pieces into the metal mounts of the bars, place them on the intended side, and tighten the screws firmly until the unit is stable. Adjust the height of the pulley/riser bar as desired.
  4. Shoulder rests: Place them on the head end of the carriage, choose the desired shoulder width, and adjust the supports.
  5. Rope system: Feed the rope ends through the pulleys and adjust the length precisely using the T-screws. Then, attach the desired handles. With the retractable rope system, simply pull to the desired length.
  6. Foot straps: Position the bottom loop at the desired height and hook the foot strap onto the outside.
  7. Footbar: Loosen the rail screw and remove the adjustment knob to facilitate assembly (on both sides). Insert the bar into the rail slots – loosely, not jammed – and secure the adjustment knob and screw at the desired height.
  8. Footplate / Jump board: Insert the padded footplate into the designated slot; the jump board can be inserted into the same slot as an alternative. Adjust the lower front wheels as far as possible to securely fix both; for additional stability of the jump board, raise the footbar to its stop.
  9. Carriage stoppers & headrest: Position carriage stoppers in the provided holes as needed and install the headrest.
  10. Spring bar & springs: Attach the spring bar and insert the springs. Use the springs to choose the desired resistance – the reformer is ready for use.
  11. Final check before first use

    • Are all screws and fasteners tight?
    • Are all springs fully and correctly attached at both ends? (A spring that is not closed can detach with high force.)
    • Is the carriage secured and running smoothly?

The guide Reformer Springs & Resistance explains the appropriate resistance. You can read about how to maintain the equipment long-term under Maintaining & Servicing Your Reformer.
