Before bringing a reformer into your home, the same question almost always arises: Does the machine actually fit in my room? The good news is that a reformer requires less space than many think. Here you will find specific measurements, the realistic space requirements around the unit, and space-saving solutions if things get tight.
The short answer
A classic Pilates reformer is about 2.4 meters long and 60–70 cm wide. To ensure you can easily get on and off and work with straps or a jumpboard, it is best to plan for a clear area of about 3 × 1.5 meters. A standard room height of 2.4 meters is sufficient for almost all exercises.
Reformer measurements in detail
Reformers differ depending on the model, but they generally fall within a clear range:
- Length: usually 238–245 cm. With a protruding footbar or platform, the total length can reach up to about 260 cm.
- Width: around 58–70 cm.
- Height: 30–66 cm depending on the design. Studio models stand higher (for easier, back-friendly entry and exit), while home models are often lower.
The exact dimensions for each model can be found in the "Specifications" tab on the respective product page—every detail there is provided directly by the manufacturer.
How much space do you need around it?
The footprint alone is only half the story. For a comfortable workout, add some space for movement:
- Along the sides: 30–50 cm each, so you can stand at the side, make corrections, and work with the straps.
- At the foot end: around 50–80 cm for changing springs, using the jumpboard, and standing exercises.
- At the head end: some breathing room for movements with arms above the head.
In total, a clear area of about 3 × 1.5 meters is comfortable. A tighter setup can also work in about 2.7 × 1.2 meters.
Ceiling height — when it counts
For most reformer exercises, a standard ceiling height is plenty. Height becomes more relevant in two cases:
- With a tower / half-cadillac: The vertical structure is higher—check the model height against your ceiling height here.
- Jumpboard and standing exercises: When jumping or performing upright exercises, some overhead clearance is pleasant. From a ceiling height of about 2.3 m, you are on the safe side.
The right floor
A reformer does not require a special floor. What is important is:
- Level and stable — on an uneven floor, the carriage may not glide smoothly.
- Load-bearing — with a weight of about 30–90 kg plus the person training, any standard floor is perfectly suitable; reinforcement is not necessary.
- Protected — a thin mat underneath protects parquet floors and dampens noise.
Limited space? These solutions help
No one has to go without reformer training, even in small apartments:
- Folding reformers can be folded up after training and stored in a space-saving way.
- Telescopic models can be reduced in length.
- Vertical storage: Some models can be stored on their end, requiring only a fraction of the floor space.
You can find an overview of all models in the reformer overview.
Checklist before purchasing
- Is there a clear area of at least ~2.7 × 1.2 m (comfortable: 3 × 1.5 m) available?
- Is the placement area level, stable, and load-bearing?
- For tower/half-cadillac: Checked the room height against the model height?
- If space is limited: Considered a folding or telescopic model?
- Compared the exact model dimensions in the "Specifications" tab?
Frequently asked questions
Does a reformer fit in a normal living room?
Yes. For the footprint, a clear stretch of about 2.4 meters in length is sufficient; with some space to move, approx. 3 × 1.5 meters is ideal. This can be accommodated in most living rooms or bedrooms.
How long is a Pilates reformer exactly?
Most reformers are 238–245 cm long. With a protruding platform or footbar, the total length can be up to about 260 cm. The exact length is listed in the specifications for each model.
Do I need a reinforced floor?
No. Depending on the model, a reformer weighs about 30–90 kg—any normal, level floor can easily support this. A protective mat underneath is recommended.
Are there reformers for small rooms?
Yes. Folding or telescopic models can be stored compactly after training, and some reformers can also be stored vertically.
